Purpose of heat tracing design
Heat tracing systems are used for freeze protection or process temperature maintenance on pipelines, tanks, valves and equipment. Pipe diameter, insulation thickness, ambient temperature, target temperature and process safety must be evaluated together.
Cable type and power selection
Self-regulating cables provide temperature-dependent power output and safe operation in many field applications. Constant wattage cables may be preferred in special processes. Cable output must cover calculated heat loss.
Control panel and sensor location
Thermostat, RTD sensor, contactor/SSR, earth leakage protection and alarm outputs are important for system safety. Sensor location should represent actual process temperature.
Installation and commissioning
Cable fixing, heat transfer tape, insulation installation, labeling and electrical tests should be checked before commissioning.
