Role of heating in plastic injection
Temperature stability in barrel, nozzle, mold and hot runner zones directly affects product quality in plastic injection molding. Correct heater selection is critical for melt flow, cycle time, surface quality and energy consumption.
Band, nozzle and cartridge heater selection
Mica or ceramic band heaters are used on barrel zones, compact nozzle heaters on nozzle areas and cartridge heaters in mold or block applications. Diameter, width, power, surface temperature, clamping structure and cable exit must be evaluated together.
Control and sensor location
PID control, SSR/SCR power control and correct sensor location reduce temperature fluctuations. A thermocouple or RTD placed too close to the heater or too far from the process point may cause poor control behavior.
Reducing failure risks
- Avoid loose clamping contact
- Protect cable exits from mechanical stress
- Select proper watt density and surface load
- Protect against moisture, plastic leakage and mechanical damage
